My key fob will not work on my renault scenic after changing the batteries?

I just changed the batteries on my key fob for my 1998 renault megane scenic and now it will not open the car, or more importantly turn off the immobiliser! Help!

  1. You only have a set time to do it, there may be some advice out their on a Renault forum but I did find this. Key no longer turns off car immobliser (1998, RT) As an alternative to buying a new key, from Jamie Ford: I have found a solution, It can be used all the time but does take a few moments to perfect. What the owner needs to do is find out the 4 Digit code for the immobiliser from the dealer. They usually complain and say this number does not exist but it does. Depending on the dealer there may be a charge for this number (no more than £30). When you have the number, you turn on the ignition. The red light on the dash should flash rapidly, press in the lock button on the dash and the light should slow down. You need to count the number of flashes to correspond with the first digit of the code, then release the button pressing it in again for the second number and so on. When all numbers have been entered in this way the button should be released and the light will stay illuminated for about 10 seconds - when the light goes out the immobiliser is turned off and you can start the car.... It sounds a little long winded but when you get the hang of it it takes about 30 sec to complete and saves the owner about 150 quid on a new key....
  2. The key needs *resetting* a Renault dealer can do this for you, Or if your lucky it will tell you how to do it in your vehicles handbook.
  3. Sounds to me as if the fob need to be re programmed to the car. Most car electrical companies can do it, or try the main dealers.
  4. I used to have a 1997 Renault Megane, the key fob 'lost' it's 'code' and so could not contact the car a number of times. Sometimes this would just happen out of the blue, not neccessarily after changing batteries. The good news is, this cost only about £40 to get re-programmed. The bad news is, you have to get the car to a Renault dealer first. Good luck!!
  5. if you are in the AA or RAC i would call them out saying you cant start the car they will soon figure out its the fob which is a common problem they have the equipment to re code your fob and it costs you nowt.... i have done it myself
  6. Whoever said AA or RAC is correct, I was on holidays one year and took my keys in for a swim when I realised what had happened I took the fob apart and dried it out. After that nothing responded (like yours) so I called the RAC they had something to put the key into which sorted it. Good luck.
  7. Obvious question, but are the batteries the right way up? I don't know if this works on renault but vauxhall keys can be reset by manually opening the door, switching on, and holding the fob button in for 10 seconds
